Just got out of a teleconference between an Obama spokesman and the NA-YGN (North American Young Generation in Nuclear). Some highlights:
The three Westinghouse people to attend were myself (Republican), a woman I didn't know (presumably a Democrat), and my coworker who invited us (undecided, "probably going to stoop to vote Republican").
- Obama is opposed to Yucca mountain, the current storage facility of nuclear waste. To this, the presumdem said "Wow. He really needs to get educated." It reminded me of an Alec Baldwin HuffPo article.
-- Obama is also against recycling nuclear waste as he believes it will put out more weapons grade material. So it seems like he doesn't want to store the waste or reuse it (and our current nuclear methods mean there will be waste).
-- The spokesman kept saying "if it turns out nuclear is the best source of energy ... ". Keep in mind this was to an audience of all nuclear industry workers. This would be like saying to autoworkers in Detroit "if American cars are actually the best ... ".
-- McCain has pushed for at least 45 new plants, but the spokesman said they questioned his sincerity. When asked how many the Obama camp wants, the question was unsubtly dodged.
-- Several studies since 9/11 have shown that these nuclear plants we want to build are safe, but when this was mention, the spokesman said that Obama still wasn't sure and mentioned Three Mile Island (which, mind you, wasn't the catastrophe it was made out to be, and nobody suffered from radiation effects).

This is interesting and you are right about 3 Mile Island, but it made good scare fodder.
Why were there only three people from Westinghouse? And how did you get to go? Seems this should have been general interest to the entire department. And what the heck's a "presumdem"? this oldmanpops on moms account
"Presumdem" was my shorthand way of the saying "the woman who was PRESUMably a DEMocrat."
Very clever.
There were only the three of us because it wasn't well advertised (I got an email late yesterday afternoon) and I think most people at Westinghouse have already made up their minds who they're voting for. However, the teleconference itself had about 100 people dialed in (NA-YGN is 4000+ members).
The picture of Obama shows him at his community organizing, associates with former terrorists best. We need to circulate this one with appropriate slogans. Agent of change? I think not! Agent of self promotion.
I think that picture is of him when he played poker. he was supposed to be positioned at one point as a "man's man" who learned the about the hard knocks of chicago's political culture through the poker games that all of the city's politican's played in.
he was positioned as being worldly, and wise, but learned how to be so in a safe, nocorrupt environment. The dems actually want this picture of him circulated--they feel it helps his image since he's so skinny. (at least, that's what I remember from last spring when I first saw this picture).
